Starting promptly at 9 a.m., talented, creative and fun loving people will compete on the beach in five categories for who can build the best sandcastle:

  • Sand Fleas for children up to age eight (with an adult)

  • Sand Hoppers for nine to 15 year-olds

  • Sand Tribes for families

  • Sand Shapers for adults

  • Sand Pros for sand castle professionals

The money raised through registration fees, sale of the tee-shirts, merchandise and other donations go to helping a variety of charitable causes promoted and assisted by The Clamshell Foundation.

"One of the things that we donate to the most consistently every year is to give college scholarships to graduating East Hampton seniors. We also often donate food to East Hampton residents in need. We started originally donating turkeys, but were told that turkeys are often too big for some people with small ovens. So, we started giving roasting chickens," Rossetti Perchik, Clamshell Foundation Executive Director explained. "Usually we give out 100 eight to 10-pound roasting chickens. However, last year we gave out over 300 around Christmas and Thanksgiving."

With a concept formulated in 1991, the 1st Annual East Hampton Sand Castle Contest, took place on August 26, 1992 at the Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett, NY.

The whole concept for the Annual Sand Castle Contest and subsequently, The Clamshell Foundation, began while Perchik was living and working in Tulsa, Oklahoma. "In Tulsa they had a Sand Castle Contest on the banks of the Arkansas River, which ran through the west side of town. The river was controlled by a dam run by the Army Corps of Engineers. A week before the contest, the Engineers would slow the outflow and drop the water level so you would have more sand. When I moved back to East Hampton, I couldn’t imagine, with one of the best beaches in the world, that there wasn’t a contest." recalled Perchik.
